Homage to Sion Assidon: A Life Devoted to the Palestinian Cause

Publication Date

The tribute document “Homage to Sion Assidon (1946–2025): A Life Devoted to Justice, Anti-Imperialism, and the Palestinian Cause,” commemorates the Moroccan-Jewish anti-Zionist activist who died in Rabat on 12 November 2025. Born in Safi and radicalised in France within the Marxist-Leninist Ila al-Amam movement, Assidon was imprisoned and tortured for twelve years (1972–1984), yet emerged as one of Morocco’s most resolute voices against normalisation with Israel. He pioneered the BDS campaign in Morocco as early as 2002, co-founded the Moroccan Association for Human Rights and the Moroccan Front for the Support of Palestine and Against Normalisation, and was a founding member of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN). The text portrays him as living proof that anti-Zionism is an ethical imperative rather than a political choice, celebrates his lifelong insistence that “the Palestinian cause is a national Moroccan cause” inseparable from Maghrebi anti-colonial struggle, and frames his unwavering advocacy for a democratic, de-Zionised Palestine “from the river to the sea” and the right of return as a moral compass for Jewish and Arab activists alike. Concluding with a collective pledge from the network never to compromise or accept “crumbs disguised as peace,” the homage transforms Assidon’s death into a renewed vow of revolutionary continuity, promising that his clarity, courage, and tenderness toward the oppressed will continue to fuel campaigns, demonstrations, and the chant of “Free, free Palestine” until total liberation.
